Undertale is a game that I adore, it had a massive impact on my life, and even still is a very important part to who I am as a person
Feel free to click around, and if you want to leave at any time, remember you can always Flee
For anyone who's been living under a rock, Undertale was an extremely popular video game released in September of 2015, made by Toby Fox, with help from Temmie Chang
The story was amazing, the writing was funny and heartwrenching when it needed to be, the characters were great, and the music was iconic and absolutely incredible
Deltarune was released later on Halloween of 2018, as a "sister game" to Undertale (not a sequel or prequel or midquel or any other quel you can think of)
This time the release was in chapters, and as of right now two of the seven are out, with hopefully new releases coming soon
(this shrine is currently under contruction, and so none of the other pages are up yet!)
Undertale was the very first game I bought on Steam, and was when I first started taking video games more seriously.
Click one of the character sprites on the side to hear my experience with that character in battle!
Toriel is the first boss battle in the game, and gave me unrealistic expectations to how easy the game would be (I'm bad at video games, a fact which will become clearer soon)
After a while, the bullets will start avoiding you, something which is very much appreciated, and eventually the fight will end
(I didn't actually know how to beat her for a while, and so I kept Fleeing bc I thought that's what was supposed to happen...)
Papyrus is a personal favourite character of mine, I think he's hilarious and cool, and his fight actually is a lot of fun, with his theme being so high energy
I did lose a lot when fighting him the first time though, I think it's pretty funny that when you lose you get put in this shed, which can't be entered from the outside, meaning I haven't seen it since my first run
His date scene is such a good bit, and I'm sad I don't have the space to show off the HUD here since it truely is a masterpiece
Mad Dummy isn't really a major boss fight, they're more minor, but (surprise surprise) I just couldn't beat them
I remember that year for Christmas break, my family went to Cuba, and I insisted that we bring the family laptop (even though we wouldn't have wifi) just so I could play Undertale and have my ass continually handed to me by this enemy.
Plus they have my all time favourite funny quote - "I DON'T NEED FRIENDS!!! I'VE GOT KNIVES!!!... I'm... Out of knives.
(and they have the best theme, fight me)
I actually had to look up how to beat Undyne because I didn't pick up on the clues at all, which were that you were supposed to flee
I like her fight a lot though, and I struggled with it but did it so many times that the first few phases I got down to a science, and could basically do it with my eyes closed (I even still have some of the muscle memory)
I actually beat her while we were in Cuba as well, after I finally broke past the scurge that was the Mad Dummy
I actually was pretty good with Muffet's fight, mostly because it was a lot easier to keep tempo and avoid attacks when the movement was so limited... funny how that happens, huh?
I was super into Muffet's music, moreso than any of the other songs, I tried to play Undertale music for my family (specifically Spider Dance, which probably wasn't the best pick) and they'd make fun of me because they thought it sounded weird
Also, Spider Dance is what got me into Electro Swing because someone on Tumblr posted a link to a Soundcloud mashup of it and Lone Digger, which was actually pretty awesome
When I was fighting Mettaton at the time, and my mom was nearby when one of the only voicelines in the entire game played. It was that one. Unfortunate. I had to very quickly explain what was happening and why it wasn't something completely inappropriate...
I know I said Dummy! was the best battle theme, but Death by Glamour is very close, and the mechanics of this fight are just so much fun to enage with
Mettaton is such a great character, and his design absolutely rocks. Shoutout to a transmasc king
I will never forget the moment when Asgore shattered the Mercy button. I had been going throughout the entire game fleeing or sparing, and that option was gone- I was locked into his fight with no escape.
It didn't help that I had no experience with the fight menu, and so trying to attack him went disasterously... His fight took the longest by far, with a death count in the 50s
It really struck me how this man who seemed so kind and meek beforehand could become so callous and cold towards me, and the fact that I was left with no other option than to fight was devastating after not needing to
I can't put the sprite here since it won't fit, but the Photoshop Flowey fight was an absolute nightmare... as it should be. I mean, the song playing is literally called "Your Best Nightmare"
It was a struggle for me to deal with at first, but I did get it done in one sitting (though this was because I was afraid of what would happen if I didn't complete it in one)
The fact that the game crashes every time you die is smart, if not very irritating to deal with, and it got to a point where I reached the end of the custom messages and just got Flowey making fun of me for sucking
Asriel Dreemurr, the God of Hyperdeath - both the coolest and dumbest name a final boss
I love this fight, it feels very final, that all of your hard work and compassion has culminated here, in trying to save a lost child
I will admit, I usually cry a lot when playing Undertale, and I remember getting very emotional all throughout the fight and especially at the end. The hug you give him at is so tender and sweet, and I always make sure to walk all the way back through the ruins to talk to him before the game ends for good, even though it takes forever. It's worth it.
I've never fought sans.
No, really. I'm serious. I've never actually completed a No Mercy route, it's just not something that interests me, since I'm not great at combat and it feels really bad to see the characters I like get hurt and die
Megalovania is a great song, and deserves all the praise it gets, even though I do think it's a bit overused compared to the other songs the OST has to offer
Seems a bit too excited to talk to you about video games he likes...
Enjoys thick cut pippled potato chips
You compliment WREN on his bullet dodging skills he's acquired through his many playthroughs
He doesn't believe you, but is grateful for the praise anyways
You tell WREN you aren't completely sure what a leitmotif is and how it relates to Undertale
His face lights up and starts talking about music theory and themes, completely forgetting what you were talking about before
You ask WREN which is better, Undertale or Deltarune
He goes on a very long rant about the merits of each game, but eventually concludes that he likes Undertale more, but that this isn't a fair fight since Deltarune isn't finished yet
You try to tell WREN that undertale is cringe
He glares at you and says nothing
You hum the melody of the main Undertale theme
WREN recognizes it and happily hums along with you
You tell WREN that the spritework in undertale is lacking, and is a weakpoint of the game
He nods in agreement, but says that the sometimes lackluster art doesn't take away from the story
He also says that the art in Deltarune is a lot better, with a lot more detail and wider variety of animations... (he goes on like this for a while)
You tell WREN that when Undertale first released, you had a conversation with Toby Fox and he gave you a free copy of the game since yours glitched out
He's impressed, and maybe a little jealous
I've made a LOT of Undertale/Deltarune art over the years
I wanted to show off the first art I did when I got my tablet in 2016, and my most recent art from 2021!
